A Vietnamese court sentenced real estate tycoon Truong My Lan to death because she was convicted of embezzlement and bribery in a scheme that defrauded a Vietnamese bank of millions of dollars.
I'm all for stiff penalties for people who embezzle or defraud others but the death penalty for such crimes?
That's barbaric and inhumane. I would have said that life in prison would be a fair sentence. That would definitely be a sentence that would send be a harsh penalty and one that would severely punish a convict.
I wonder if human rights groups will put pressure on Vietnam to commute the sentence to life in prison or a lesser penalty.
I don't believe in the death penalty but you can make a case for it in the most brutal murders.
I don't understand how a person who hasn't killed someone would be sentenced to death. I also don't think that the death penalty would definitely be a deterrent. People with bad intentions will still do the crime.
The United States is an example. States execute dozens of convicted murderers to death, yet violent crime in America is still obnoxiously high.
I'm not sure any sentence would deter a person from committing a crime and if the purpose of lengthy sentences are to punish a criminal severely it would seem reasonable to sentence a criminal to a long prison term.
I hope Lan has her death penalty commuted to lesser sentence.
